Episode 39: Halloween: Vandalism or Treat?
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
As we approach Halloween, our weekly radio episode is an exploration of the informal holiday that takes place on October 31st. We talk about the Celtic, Roman, Pagan, and Catholic traditions that lead to modern day Halloween, from Samhain to Feralia all the way to All Saint’s Day. And we wouldn’t be the Sofa Kings if we didn’t discuss how much corporations gain from the day, to the tune of billions of dollars per year (with a staggering amount spent on pet costumes!).
The episode rounds out with a discussion of the most popular costumes, statistically, for both kids and adults as well as a look at the phenomenon of “slutty” Halloween costumes. From Devil’s Night in Detroit where they burn down the city to the urban myth of poisoned trick or treat candy and razor blades in your apples, we have it all covered in our special All Hallow’s Eve episode.
